Taye Diggs (Chicago) will topline the Armada Pictures feature Drum, which goes before cameras November 7 in South Africa under the direction of Zola Maseko.

Bringing Down the House writer Jason Filardi penned the project, which is based on the real life accounts of Drum magazine writer Henry Nxumalo, who risked his life exposing the brutal nature of the South African apartheid regime.

Diggs, who earlier this month was handed an excellence in filmmaking award at the 39th Chicago Film Festival, will next be seen in the GreeneStreet production Slow Burn.

Macaulay Culkin as a Young Hannibal Lecter?

Bloody-Disgusting tells us that an article in Hot Dog Magazine says producer Dino De Laurentiis is interested in casting Macaulay Culkin in The Lecter Variation after seeing his performance in Party Monster.

While this casting has not been confirmed, Lecter's creator, Thomas Harris, is plotting the film which follows the serial killer from his childhood in Lithuania through a period in Paris in his teens to his arrival in the US. De Laurentiis said that four actors will be required to play young Lecter at the ages of 12, 16, 20 and 25.

"Lecter was born into a very rich family but the war destroyed his family and killed his parents," explained De Laurentiis. "He was left with his sister with whom he had a very close relationship."

Universal is likely to again distribute the movie whose title refers to Bach's Goldberg Variations which have been a recurring musical reference in the Lecter saga to date.

Synopsis:
Davey Stone is the town hoodlum and holiday Scrooge. Rude, violent, and a drunk, he routinely harasses people and destroys property, especially during Christmas and Hanukah. When Davey goes too far and gets arrested, the judge is prepared to throw the book at him. However, an old basketball referee by the name of Whitey intercedes on his behalf. Whitey knew Davey when he was a good kid and is determined to bring the good side out of him again. The judge releases Davey into Whitey's custody, but if he screws up, he'll be sent to jail for 10 years.

Davey begins to change his ways and even tries to win the heart of his childhood sweetheart, but it's only a matter of time until he screws things up yet again. The final straw comes when Davey crushes the hopes of Whitey about getting a community service award. Is it possible for Davey to see the error of his ways and set everything right?

8 Crazy Nights is rated PG-13 for frequent crude and sexual humor, drinking and brief drug references.

The Movie:
This is essentially a typical Adam Sandler film, only animated. It's like Sandler decided he wanted to do a musical and the only logical way to do that was to make it a cartoon. This also allows him to play multiple characters in the film. If this appeals to you, then 8 Crazy Nights is right up your alley. It's his variation of the old Scrooge formula.

The animation is pretty decent and offers up some odd moments. I must admit that I never thought I'd see a cartoon Bambi pooping, a three-breasted cartoon woman, or other bizarre imagery. Sandler does take full advantage of the cartoon medium.

While most of the musical numbers are forgettable, there was one funny one. A love song in the middle of the film is a cute ballad that suddenly throws bizarre imagery at you unexpectedly. It's hard to describe, but it was one of the funnier moments in the film.

All that being said, though, this film did nothing for me. Yeah, there were some really funny moments, but they were few and far between. It was not worth sitting through the rest of the film just to see them. The film was generally sappy, predictable, and boring. Throw in some gross-out humor and profanities and you have a Disney cartoon on crack.

Adam Sandler's main character Davey is not likable at all. He's rude, violent, insulting, loud, and generally a jerk through 90% of the film. Not only is his final turn from the Dark Side unbelievable, you don't care about the character at all. You hope to see him thrown in jail. Sandler's other character of Whitey has an incredibly annoying high-pitched voice. I thought Sandler couldn't come up with a more annoying voice than that of his Little Nicky character, but I was wrong. The same goes for Eleanore. And was I mistaken or was someone else doing the singing for Adam Sandler's character?

I guess I'm closed minded, but I've always viewed animated movies as either children's films or drama. I've never really viewed it as a medium for a teen gross out movie, yet this is what it is. I must admit I was surprised to see Adam Sandler's cartoon character stumble around drunk, flip off another character, and yell out profanities. Anyone else expecting a kids' flick may find themselves walking out of the theater with children in tow. Heed the PG-13 warning. And the film has little, if anything, to do with Hanukah.

This film is also filled with shameless corporate promotions. It ventures into the absurd when TWO different songs feature stores in a mall. In fact, one of the songs features the Foot Locker, K-B Toys, and Panda Express company logos singing to Sandler telling him to cry. That was one of the points when I asked myself why I wasn't walking out of the movie.

With weak songs, a boring plot, and no particular audience in mind, this film is not one to go out of your way to see. Adam Sandler uber-fans and junior high boys will probably get the most entertainment from this movie.

The Extras:
As bad as the movie is, I�m not quite sure why they decided to release this as a two disc set. I really hated the movie, so I wasn�t too thrilled about watching the extras for this. However, I must admit that they did a thorough job of providing the extra features. If you�re a fan of the film, you�ll enjoy them. If not, you�ll want to skip it altogether. Here are a few of the extras you�ll find:

Commentary by Whitey, Eleanore, and writer-producer Allan Covert � I didn�t think this movie could possibly be more annoying, yet this commentary finds a way to make it just that. Sandler provides commentary as both Whitey and Eleanore. So his high pitched annoying voice ends up being 2/3 of the whole commentary track. It was so bad that I had to turn it off after about five minutes. However, if it doesn�t bother you, you�ll probably find this the better of the two commentaries.

Commentary by Seth Kearsley, art director Philip A. Cruden, head of animation Stephan Franck, effects supervisor John Bermudas, and executive producer Ken Tsumura � This is an incredibly dry commentary provided by the crew of the film. They talk endlessly about how difficult the film was to get made (and I wonder if that should have been their first sign to quit). I kept fast forwarding through the commentary trying to find them talking about the voice work, the plot, or anything else but all they seemed to talk about were logistics and how the production was put together. There�s very little of interest here.

Nine original featurettes: Eleanore, Whitey, Creating Dukesberry, Townspeople of Dukesberry, Dukesberry Sings, Jennifer & Benjamin, Voices of Dukesberry, Davey, The Deer � These are all short featurettes talking about the various characters in the film. The cast and crew come on and talk about their takes on the characters. There�s also behind the scenes footage of the voice cast recording their dialogue. It�s pretty well put together and informative�if you�re interested. Saturday Night Live fans will be pleased to see John Lovitz, Kevin Nealon, and Rob Schneider.

13 deleted/alternate scenes with optional commentary � There�s a ton of deleted scenes here. Most of them are still in an early rough form. I didn�t find any of them particularly interesting. The fact that there are so many seems to be indicative of problems they had with the plot.

Multi-angle animation progression � This is a standard feature on animation DVDs where you see scenes in storyboard form, rough pencil animation, and the final product. It�s interesting stuff for animation fans.

HBO First Look special � This is your typical behind the scenes featurette. Somehow they manage to make this movie look more interesting than it really is.

"Chanukah Song Part 3" music video � The �Chanukah Song� is probably the reason that most people are interested in this movie, yet it isn�t really featured at all except in the credits. It gets one extra on the DVD and it seems to be something that was recorded on Saturday Night Live. Sandler is backed up by some children�s choir and Rob Schneider even appears at one point. It�s a funny variation of the original song, but not on quite the same level of originality.

"A Day with the Meatball" short film � This is like a 3 minute video featuring Adam Sandler�s bulldog running around town doing funny things. It�s slightly amusing, yet it comes across as nothing more than Sandler exercising his power to make fancy home movies of his dog.

"NBA: Love It Live" TV spot � This is extremely short commercial for the NBA featuring Sandler�s characters Whitey and Davey singing a song. Nothing really special here

The Bottom Line:
This is a terrible movie and not even two discs and a nice selection of extra features can save it. I don�t recommend this film.

In a weekend where the top four films from last week remained in their spots, New Line's Freddy vs. Jason held on to first place despite dropping a hefty 63%. The horror match-up added $13.5 million to bring its impressive two-week total to $61.5 million.

Sony's S.W.A.T stayed in second place with $10.8 million for a three-week total of $88.1 million, Kevin Costner's Open Range was again in third with $9.4 million to bring the two-week cume to $29.2 million and Disney's Freaky Friday added $9.4 million in fourth for a strong performance of $74.5 million after three weeks.

Of the three newcomers, Jackie Chan's The Medallion fared best rounding out the top five and earning $8.2 million from 2,648 theaters.

Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl and Seabiscuit keep going strong, while Uptown Girls took a 50% plunge in its sophomore frame.

Dimension's new My Boss's Daughter barely snuck into the top ten with $5 million from 2,201 locations. Paramount's Marci X, starring Lisa Kudrow and Damon Wayans, has disaster written all over it. The comedy was only able to gather $856,000 in 1,200 theaters for the seventeenth spot.

Revolution Moving Forward with XXX

Rob Cohen, who directed the original, has right of first refusal. However, if he plans to make Columbia Pictures' Stealth as his next feature, the reins will likely go to Lee Tamahori, who is in talks to direct XXX2.

Cohen has spent the summer location scouting for Stealth, but there is no firm start date for the project, and Cohen has not officially stepped off XXX2.

If Tamahori should come aboard the project, it would mark the helmer's third franchise after directing Die Another Day and Along Came a Spider.

'Herbal Kint' was one of the ComingSoon.net winners who attended the Freddy vs. Jason ultimate showdown in Las Vegas this morning and sent us a detailed report!

I just wanted to contact you and say thank you for the passes to the Freddy vs. Jason press conference in Las Vegas this morning. The event was very well put together. It started with some preview clips of the movie, which we were told hadn't been previously seen. There was a short, perhaps 7 minute long, behind the scenes type short, with scenes from the trailer intercut. We also were treated to a finished version of the cornfield rave scene, which was very cool. The shots of Jason on fire running through the corn were definitely well done. At that time, Michael Buffer was introduced and then he preceded to introduce the combatants. The weigh-in was done, and Jason originally came in at a whopping 320 lbs. However, Buffer took his machete from him and the weight dropped to a more reasonable, still terrifying 275 lbs. Ronnie Yu and the producer of the movie, whose name escapes me, were brought out for the question and answer portion, but no questions were directed to them. The producer did act as Jason's faux mouthpiece, however. The questions were standard fare, but it was fun to hear Freddy's quite off the cuff responses. The press conference concluded with a Bally's sportsbook representative announcing Jason as a 7/5 favorite, over Freddy's 2/3 odds. Overall, it was very enjoyable, and I got some cool swag. Can't wait to see the flick July 30th. Thanks again.

Synopsis:
This movie is based on the Lego Bionicle toys.

On a fantasy island of Mata Nui on a distant planet, a race of bio-mechanical beings lives in peace. Created by a mystical god, they live in various communities throughout the island. With powers based on fire, ice, air, water, and other elements, each is unique. Each community is guarded by a �Toa�. A prophecy says that one day a 7th Toa will be discovered and resurrect the god and defeat his evil nemesis and brother, Makuta.

One day when Jaller and his friend Takua find a magical mask of light, they realize that it can lead them to the 7th Toa. In order to fulfill the prophecy, the two friends go on a quest to see where the mask will lead them. Unfortunately, Makuta wants to stop them before they can accomplish their mission. He sends the evil Rahkshi after them to steal the mask and capture the herald. As they destroy the villages and wreak havoc, the Bionicles realize they must unite in order to help Jaller and Takua fulfill the prophecy.

Bionicle � Mask Of Light is rated PG for action violence and scary images.

The Movie:
As a child of the 80�s, I�m a big fan of cartoons based on toys. I was a big follower of Transformers, He-Man, Mask, GI Joe, Thundercats, Centurions, etc etc etc. So I really don�t have any bias against cartoons made from toy lines. That being said, I didn�t really enjoy Bionicle � Mask Of Light. Since I don�t really know much about the toys, I went into this film with no background at all. In very short order I was lost and never caught up again.

The movie is not really clear for people just jumping into the world. Are the Bionicles robots? Living beings? Are their powers magical? Where are they from? At first the short ones appear to be children, but later on it becomes apparent they are more or less adults in the Bionicle civilization. The film starts out with a really convoluted, abstract telling of the mystical origins of the characters along with ramblings about a prophecy and other mumbo jumbo. I tried my best to follow it, but ended up being rather lost through the whole thing. About the only thing that was straightforward were the scenes where the bad guys chased the good guys. That was more or less easy to comprehend. Confusion aside, the story is very similar to Lord of the Rings. Two little heroes go on a quest with a mystical object to save the world. The main bad guy sends all sorts of horrors after our little heroes, yet a group of powerful friends holds them off just long enough for the underdogs to save the day. I guess if you�re going to steal, steal from the best. Unfortunately, that basic plot is bogged down with a lot of extra baggage that makes it inaccessible to the uninitiated.

While the plot was not that great, the movie looks really good. The computer animation isn�t the quality of Final Fantasy, but it�s better than your typical TV CG fare. The characters look like the toys come to life. The environments are imaginative and impressive. They have just the right mix of realism and fantasy to make them interesting. The action is pretty well choreographed with an eye towards extreme sports. The final result is a visually impressive movie.

This DVD comes with a fair number of extras. Here are some highlights:

Behind the Scenes � The Making Of Bionicle: Mask Of Light � This is a brief �making of� video for the film. You see the creators talking about the development process, character design, and voice casting. You get to see a little behind the scenes footage of the actors recording the dialogue, but none of them are recognizable. The video also details how they communicated with animators in Taipei who made the movie. Overall, it�s a brief but interesting look at the making of the film.

�Mata Nui Explorer� � Insights about the World and Characters � With this feature you can click on a map of the island and get details about the various villages and their Toas. You�ll get character descriptions, 360 degree views of the characters, and more.

Deleted Scenes with Optional Commentary � There are a handful of deleted scenes on the DVD. Most of the scenes are unfinished and they lack sound effects or dialogue. None of them are particularly noteworthy or revealing. You can also watch them with director�s commentary.

Directors� Commentary � The two director�s provide commentary for this movie. They are really rather dry and they take a while to get rolling. Most of their discussion involves the technical aspect of the film such as CG animation, effects, and more. They also talk about the look of the film and working with Lego on the designs. The fact that they focus more on the look of the movie rather than the story seems to be revealing.

�Wall of History� � Enhanced Viewing Mode � You can watch the movie and text windows with bits of trivia will occasionally pop up. For those unfamiliar with the Bionicle world, the trivia may help you understand better what�s going on. It gives a fair amount of background info that helps bring you up to speed.

Storyboard To Film Comparison � This is one scene from the movie where they show early storyboards alongside the final product. It�s amazing to see how closely the final product follows the original envisioning of it.

Sneak Peek Into The Next Bionicle Storyline � The producer of the film pops in very briefly to tell you the next film will give more information on the origins of the Bionicles. There�s no footage shown from it.

The Bottom Line:

In the end, this movie only has limited appeal. It�s not for general audiences. I would only recommend this movie for young boys, fans of Lego�s Bionicle, and CG animation aficionados. There�s not much here for anyone else.

Paul Walker is the only connection between 2 Fast 2 Furious and its predecessor. This time, his character must use his racing skills to stop a drug dealer in Miami. Having become a fan of tricked out cars in the first film, Walker took it upon himself to influence some of the rods used in the sequel.

"I'd like to think I was influential in the cars driven in the movie," Walker said. "I told them, 'Look, I want to drive an R34 Nissan Skyline.' It's the first car I drive in the movie. I told them, 'Hey, Mitsubishi, they're planning this huge campaign. They're gonna launch the release of the Mitsubishi's Evolution 8 sometime early next year. I think we should talk to Mitsubishi and get them involved in the movie.' Their cars are in the movie. I don't know if it's just a coincidence or what, but I think that's a pretty gnarly coincidence. I'm like these kids. I make this movie, and I get it, because I'm into cars, and my background, and my interest in racing, and I'm putting together a race team right now and the whole bit. It was important to me that we did it justice. The first time around, the kids, they loved the movie, but their whole thing was, 'Man, why didn't you have more ridiculous cars. Why didn't you have a Skyline. Why didn't you have this? Why didn't you have that?' So, I had a little more muscle to flex this time, so I did, and we got some better stuff in there."

Now that he's an experienced driver, Walker was able to do many of his own stunts. "Over 120 miles an hour was the top speed, weaving in and out of traffic. That chase sequence on the freeway where basically we're racing for the job, I'd worked with the stunt coordinator and the 2nd unit director before. Universal, they let me do a lot of the driving in the first one, so they let me do a lot of the high speed stuff. Not all of it, you know. Most of the really intense stuff was shot 2nd unit. But when they wanted to see me behind the wheel with the aerial shots, the helicopters and stuff, a lot of that was shot, most of that was shot over, well over 120 miles an hour. I probably shouldn't even be talking about it to be honest with you. But not to like toot my own horn too much, but it's like, these guys, they go out and they do stunts. You've got to remember, stunt men are well versed in everything. My focus has been in driving for a long time now, and with exception of my double and a couple of other guys, I was a better driver, and that's the bottom line. My double is arguably the best driver in Hollywood, and we race together all the time. Like I said, just a couple of the other guys, but they knew it John [Singleton] knew it, and a lot of the other people knew it. When certain people weren't around, they were throwing me in behind the wheel."

Comparing Singleton to the first film's director, Rob Cohen, Walker said, "They're just so different. Rob's like a director and John's more of a movie fan. He directs with a lot of analogies. The guy loves movies, there's no question. The thing I like working about John is he comes in the tent, everyday he's like, 'You should have seen the shit we did yesterday.' And it feels so good working with somebody like that. It feels so good. That guy's a kid too, especially when he's behind the camera cutting together a movie. It's something that he's feeling, and you don't find that all the time."

Walker recalled some of the analogies Singleton used when making 2 Fast 2 Furious. "A lot of references to 'The Road Warrior', but a lot of his, not influence, but I guess a lot of extreme shots, a lot of hard breaking shots as opposed to being just straight away and more traditional. I think that feels good."

A young girl (Jennifer Carpenter) dies under the care of her parish priest (Tom Wilkinson). While attending college, Emily believed she became possessed. After medical care ceases to work, she turned to her faith. In the care of her priest she dies and he goes on trial for her death. He is represented by a career-minded and driven lawyer (Laura Linney) who does not believe in God. Thus is the story of Emily Rose, told by those in the trial and the priest who watched her through her possession.
